Project Swing

Hello San Diego! If you're not already aware, this weekend there is an extra special once-a-year opportunity to learn to dance West Coast Swing. This is for people who have never tried West Coast Swing before, or any sort of dancing. So if you've never heard of it, or if you've heard of it but never tried it, this is for you.
It's called Project Swing, it's free, and it's a set of six 1-hour workshops taught by a variety of top-level professional dance teaches (some of whom are only in San Diego for this special event). If you can only make it to a couple of the workshops, that's better than nothing, and if you can make it to all of the workshops, then you will be taught all of the fundamentals needed to dance West Coast Swing.
Did I mention that it is free? Indeed it is. No purchase is necessary. You don't need to sign up for anything, you don't need to register anywhere, you don't need a partner, you don't need prior dance experience... you just need to show up. And wear clothes. You might see a card that lets you write down your email address, but even that is optional, and all that gets used for is a monthly email about Project Swing.
So here's the info...
Who: You, being taught by Parker Dearborn and other professional dance instructors.
What: It's called Project Swing, part of the larger event called SwingDiego.
Where: Town & Country Resort and Convention Center, in one of the big ballrooms. If you get to the resort, but aren't sure where to go, just ask someone.
When: Saturday, May 12th 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm
Sunday, May 13th 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Why: Because we want more people dancing West Coast Swing, and we want San Diego to be the place for it.
Website: http://swingdiego.com/project-swing/
And if you're already going to the Gaslight Gathering, just walk on over to the other end of the resort!

Little does he know I’m taking it up one of the more challenging roads in southern California: Nate Harrison Grade. It’s a seven mile switch-backing, unpaved and rutted driving challenge that draws odd thrill seekers like me. A local writer referred to a trip up The Grade as a “poor man’s National Geographic expedition”.
I concocted this little adventure after viewing some interesting YouTubes. Though it’s not for the faint of heart, I found evidence that a non-SUV can possibly make the climb under good conditions. Unfortunately, I wasn’t blessed with good conditions. On the day before my ascent, eight inches of snow fell at elevations above 4,000 feet; and Nate Harrison Grade doesn’t end for another 1,500 feet above the snow line.
I began my ascent knowing full-well I may not make it. But I also knew experiencing part of The Grade was better than none at all, especially since I’d flown across country to get here. For the first five miles, below the snow line, the conditions cooperated. I made slow and steady progress up the mountain, stopping frequently to take in the stunning and ever-improving views. The switchbacks were unrelenting and even comical in tightness at times, but the rented SUV performed flawlessly. At the first hint of snow though, bedazzlement was replaced by caution. Snow, mud, rapidly deteriorating traction, and visions of roll-overs infiltrated the adventure. A bit further on, I made the tough decision. Enough was enough even though the top was in sight.
On my way back down, my decision was affirmed. A guy in a more substantial SUV had also turned around where I did. Though I struggled with the decision, I’m certain it was the right one.
Incomplete as it was, my time on Nate Harrison Grade was spectacular. The uniqueness of the adventure, the phenomenal views, and the success of not having rolled to my death off a cliff were quite rewarding.

Amazon's local deal of the day is a half price voucher (Good for up to 6 vouchers) to the San Diego Wild Animal Park San Diego Zoo Safari Park. They are selling for $21 each. It looks like the upgraded one that includes the Africa tram tour as well. Just in case you were debating going and don't have passes already, or have folks coming to visit from out of town.
Say hi to the elephants for me! :)

Do you guys remember that guy with the pick-up truck with the desert camouflage paint (before they updated the pattern) who had that sign in the back of his truck that said "IMPEACH CLINTON" on it? I saw him on the freeway all the time for a while when I was a kid and I saw him once at the Miramar Air Show once. Anyone know what his deal was? Was he ever in the paper or anything?
